Climbin' Canuck for Comic Ink art show

This piece is for the COMIC INK art show, opening in Philly on November 1 at Locust Moon Comics. The theme of the show is to combine tattoo elements with comic book imagery. I decided to go with Wolverine, from the X-Men, and combine it with the pose of the traditional climbing panther tattoo. I used an action figure as a drawing model, and broke out the colors with stencils. After spraying, I added the details/ linework with a paint marker. I used a long and narrow canvas, so it gives the piece a cool different look. Very excited to see what other pieces people submit.

That's It ...Bye! for Leaving art show

I did this painting for the PHANTOM HAND show called "Leaving," which will open on Saturday at JINXED in Philadelphia. The topic was very open ended, basically just based on the title. I chose a darker topic of suicide. Visually, I went for a minimalist Frank Miller (Sin City era), mixed with a little Roy Lichtenstein. It's an 11x14 canvas, painted with stencils and spray paint. I did the sides in yellow to make the noose color pop a little more from a side angle.

Hot Dog Party USA for Phantom Hand

I did this piece for an upcoming show for Phantom Hand at Hot Diggity for a Philly Food Art Show on July 20. I love the Phantom Hand crew, and I love Hot Diggity, so this was a no brainer. With a tight deadline, I went with a simple 1 color stencil and re-used an old canvas and frame. Came out great in my opinion. I've called it "Hot Dog Party USA," and it's 8x10 in a painted frame.

I've been posting work in progress shots over at Instagram for all of my art. if you're interested, please follow me @bleedingedges

Corey Webster for Righteous Rides show

Hero Complex has another show, this one with a central theme of transportation in movies. I decided to do a skateboard based on the classic cheesy 80's movie, THRASHIN'! In the movie, the main character dreams of being a professional skateboarder, and dreams of having his own deck. My idea was to basically make that deck, based on the illustration he shows in the movie, and the Smash Skates logo. Unfortunately I didn't have access to an 80s shaped deck, but it came out rad. I'd had this idea in the back of my head for a while, and I'm glad this show came along to give me the proper motivation to get it done.
I did all of the artwork without any stencils, but instead cutting out little tape masks (based on my original vector artwork), and positioning them on the board before painting. This allowed for a lot more detail to stay crisp. I also upgraded my tape to the green Frogtape for this.
"Righteous Rides...And the Dudes Who Drive Them!" - A show focusing on prominent characters of fiction and their often creative ways of getting around!
From skateboards to spaceships, anything that rolls, races, flies, or crashes can be counted in this high-throttled, tour de force that celebrates your favorite modes of transportation and the characters who drive them!

Mixtape for The Dead Cats of Civilization art show

For the latest PHANTOM HAND show, focusing on dead technology, I chose the cassette tape. Ironically, I still release cassette tapes, though acknowledge the novelty of it to the average person. I did this image of a mix tape that had the tape pulled from it completely out of tape, no stencils were used. I illustrated, then cut all of the art out of tape, and re-stuck it to a canvas. I did the background in a sort of Van Halen homage as well, and surround the border with tape from an actual cassette.
Phantom Hand presents an exhibition of the antiquated and obsolete. This collection will pay tribute to occupations, tools and practices now relegated to the 'dust-bin of progress'.

The Dead Cats of Civilization is the inaugural exhibition kicking off Phantom Hand's residence at Jinxed. The first in what will be a long line of exhibitions showcasing Philadelphia illustrators, printers, designers, and cartoonists.

Host With The Most for Oscar Legends show

"Host With The Most" 8"x10" spray paint
Hero Complex Gallery has another show in CA this month, this time to coincide with the Oscars. The Oscar Legends show showcases past Oscar winning movies. In doing research for this, I realized I was an uncultured swine, and asked if I could highlight the best part of the Oscars... Billy Crystal hosting! Here you can see Billy singing what I'm sure was a memorable opening number. Done in my usual fashion with stencils/ tape masks and spray paint, which in the dead of winter is actually somewhat difficult. Spray paint and 13 degree weather are not friends, but I made it work, despite some difficulty. I also did a cool gold splatter around the frame to make the Oscar statues pop.

Blast 'Em All for Weapon of Choice art show

Weapon of Choice is an art show focusing on various weapons used in movies. Having just gotten a huge tattoo of Han Solo's blaster, combined with being on a Metallica kick lately, I decided to pay tribute to 2 cool things from my childhood. The basic design is a tribute to Metallica's Kill 'Em All record cover, with the hammer swapped for Han's blaster, and the blood based on Greedo's silhouette. This was painted on an actual LP cover with spray paint, with the aid of stencils and painter's tape. I did a little blood splatter effect on the frame as well, for some added cool factor.

Green Lantern cover for Comix Gone Rogue

Last year I did a cover for the first series of the COMIX GONE ROGUE project, so I was stoked to do one for the 2nd. Having never read a single Green Lantern comic, and growing up with a militant Marvel > DC standpoint, I went into this with an open mind. I had remembered seeing a squirrel looking Green Lantern somewhere at a comic con, so I thought it'd be funny to put him in a more prominent role. With DC revamping their universe with the New 52 gimmick, I figured why not give Ch'p a cover spread.
I sprayed 6 layers with spray paint, then drew in the detail with a paint marker. While painting, I covered the top text with some painters tape. I think it gives it a cut and paste look. A few imperfections aside, it was a real fun piece to do. I'm sure series 2 of CGR will be just as awesome as series 1.

Simpsons tribute Grody Shoguns

Lulubell Toy Bodega is having a Grody Shogun show at their retail store called
Mighty Morphin' Grody Mash-up Show. In anticipation of this, they offered blank Grodys for pre-order. If you follow my art, you are not surprised to learn that I jumped on the clear vinyl. I decided to go for a Simpsons tribute, since Escorced Man's head reminds me of Homer. I went with Karakuri as Bart. The overall sloppiness of the Grody Shoguns gave me a little bit of leeway to not be as crisp with my colors. I did almost all of the painting on the inside, except for the spray on Homer's feet and the detail for the eyes and hair. I named them "Home Boy and Brat," and you can see them at the opening on Friday, and hopefully online after that.

On The Attack for Sailor Jerry tribute art show

"On The Attack" spray paint on 8x10 canvas board
When I was invited to participate in another Sailor Jerry tribute art show, I jumped at the opportunity. The one in 2010 that I helped with was one of my favorite art shows. Tattoo style being the theme, I went with simplified stencils (based on an original drawing), which I added shading to, and then outlined. It's fun to step outside of my usual style, I like doing things like this. I even did a blood splatter on the frame with a paint marker.

Break Away for Mythology art show

This month, PHANTOM HAND is doing a show based on Mythology. I wanted to do a lion / mermaid hybrid. Imagine seeing this beast swimming toward you in the water? The design is based largely on the Straight Ahead lion, with some hand drawing on the fly for the rest. I sprayed the whole thing gold, then made a mask out of tape in the shape of the chain, then peeled it off when I was done. Gives it a cool effect, I also did some shading on the fish tail. "Break Away" - Spray paint on a 16" x 20" canvas.

ZombieSS for Pulp Love art show

PHANTOM HAND is doing a show based around vintage pulp comic magazine art. I immediately thought of a Tales from the Crypt style horror cover layout. Without an idea in mind, I started on the layout using painters tape to make the boxes and circles. Once that was set, I went with a nazi zombie theme. With all of the detail for the comic, combined with winter not being ideal spray paint season, I had to re-spray it. I added the small type with stick on letters, which I think worked way better than trying to hand letter it. I didn't feel comfortable with using a swastika, so I used the Boston Strangler logo instead. I named it "ZombieSS," and it's on a 16" x 20" canvas.

Punk Will Never Die for Artificial Dissemination 2

PHANTOM HAND is doing a show based around propaganda posters called "Artificial Dissemination 2: Propaganda to Popaganda." For this, I chose to use an image of the detained punks in Indonesia. If you're not familiar with the story, Indonesian police raided a punk fest, and put all of the punks in a camp to convert them to Islam, after a week in the camp, a reporter was there and one of the punks exclaimed "Punk will never die!" I felt that was a good rally call for them, and this story hasn't gotten much coverage. I actually don't know if they're still in the camps or not.
The painting was done in my usual spray paint and stencil style, on a 13"x19" poster frame. I sprayed the black, then taped off the border, so that the square in the center would be crisp. Unfortunately since I had to spray the white letters like 5 times, there was some overspray. I then re-assembled the frame, so it looks more like a framed poster, but is indeed an original.

Mummy Boy for Super7's Mummy Mania contest

Super7 is having a contest to paint their mascot, Mummy Boy, called Mummy Mania! To coincide with this, they released a large and pocket sized unpainted flesh tone toys for people to buy and paint. The winner in each category will be produced, which is a pretty rad prize.
I wanted to keep the paint somewhat simple, using a style similar to what they've done before, but using spray paint and a paint marker. I went with a somewhat realistic mummy color scheme, and followed the detail lines with a paint marker. Usually when I do this style of toy, I like to use a clear base and paint the inside, so I was a little worried about going too thick on the paint. Also, my paint marker died early on, so I had to do some improvising. He will be exhibited and for sale at the Mummy Mania! Customs from the Crypt Show on Saturday, January 28th, 2012, at the Super7 Store (1427 Haight Street, San Francisco, CA 94117). Doors open at 6PM Pacific.

Incredible Hulkster for Comix Gone Rogue

COMIX GONE ROGUE is a project organized by my buddy Edwin Vazquez where artists not associated with the comics do art on the covers of blanks. I got the Incredible Hulk, and I immediately thought of doing him in a classic Hulk Hogan pose. I was a little worried with the detail in the face getting lost, but I think the over-spray almost doubles as shading. Check out the other pieces on the blog too, it'll make for a sick show one day.

Rodney Dangerfield for Iconoclastic Dead

I did this stencil painting of Rodney Dangerfield for The Autumn Society's Iconoclastic Dead art show. The idea for the show is to do a portrait of a hero of yours in a Dia De Los Muertos style, so I titled this one "Sin Respeto," ("No Respect" in Spanish). This piece is a 4 stencil spray paint on 8" x 10" canvas board, with a painted frame.

The show will run from October 1st at 6:00pm - October 31st at:

Chairman Mouser for Shell Shock art show

The Autumn Society has put together a tribute art show to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles called "Shell Shock." Here is my piece for it, as you can see it's a Mouser. It was done with stencils and spray paint. I made a pattern of rats for the background in metallic silver and gold paint, using one stencil and tiled. I think it kind of looks like camouflage. The blue in the mouser is also metallic, but looks more electric blue.
You are invited to one of the most EPIC pop-culture art shows we've ever put together! The Autumn Society & Brave New Worlds Comics (Old City, Philadelphia) join forces once more to bring you SHELL SHOCK (A TMNT ART SHOW & TRIBUTE).
Please join us in celebration to these heroes in a half shell that made our childhoods and the past 25+ years radical! Not only will the event be filled with most outstanding TMNT art, but we will be visited by Brittney Schneck's TURTLE VAN!!! Other super-rad surprises are planned as well.

3B Art Show

3B is an art show organized by Autumn Society head honcho, Joe "Chogrin" Game. For the show, each artist would do 3 pieces each relating to Back to the Future, Beetlejuice and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. All of my pieces were done with spray paint and stencils as usual.
My Back to the Future piece is based on the scene where Marty puts the headphones on his father to wake him up. I titled it "Eruption," after the Van Halen song that plays in the walkman.

My Beetlejuice piece is of the creepy little priest that Beetlejuice tries to get to marry him and Lydia. I've titled it "I Now Pronounce You..." Since their wedding ceremony was never completed.

For my Bill & Ted piece, I wanted it to look like a gig poster for their band, Wyld Stallyns. Instead of a canvas, I painted it on the backer to a poster frame, which will be reassembled for the show. It's titled "Wyld Stallyns Rule!"

The show will premiere at 7pm on Thursday, May 5th @:
